Cybersecurity for small businesses.

In the final blog of this semester, as the title suggests we will discuss the importance of cyber security for small businesses. Throughout the last number of blogs, we have covered a range of digital tools that can assist small businesses, but cybersecurity arguably is top of the list in terms of importance.

In the current landscape, to survive as a business, it’s essential to have an online presence, be it the use of social media for advertising or a website to sell your products and services. Due to that requirement, it is also essential that these accounts and websites are protected and safe to use. That’s were cybersecurity comes in, cybersecurity is the practice of protecting systems, networks, and programs from digital attacks that aim to damage, access or change sensitive information/data.

While many would assume it is only large corporations that are at risk at cybersecurity attacks, smaller corporations often lack the required infrastructure to prevent attacks, and therefore are targeted. According to a 2020 report by Astra security, 40% of small businesses worldwide reported losing data due to a cyber attacks resulting in over $2.8 billion dollars in damages.

Why small businesses are at risk.

Due to limited budgets, it isn’t feasible for small businesses to heavily invest In cybersecurity measures leaving them vulnerable to phishing cams, ransomware, and data breaches.

What can be done?

Several measures can be taken to prevent cyber attacks for these firms including:

1.        Educate employees: making them aware of potential risks.

2.        Create strong passwords and MFA: long multi character passwords and multi factor authentication can all serve as preventative measures.

3.        Keep software updated: ensuring antivirus and operating systems are all up to date preventing vulnerabilities.

By implementing these procedures business will reduce the potential for cybersecurity attacks, maintaining a positive public image and no significant losses of data or finances.

Thanks for the support on the blogs over the last several weeks!

Cian.
