Evolution of Internet Technologies: From Web 1.0 to Web 3.0

How much do you really know about internet technology?

This goal of this blog is to help you understand firstly what is meant by web 1.0, and then to help you understand what the evolution of web 1.0 to web 3.0 looks like. We will also discuss what the future holds for internet technologies.

Must of us would consider ourselves pretty tech-savy, we can navigate our way around our mobile phones, we consider ourselves fluent in buzz phrases and words generated from the internet, but when asked what the web or the internet is I would imagine most would struggle to define it, or at least provide an accurate definition.

The Web, formerly referred to as the World Wide Web, is the pages/sites you see when you log online. The Internet is a series of interconnected computer systems the Web functions on, plus the medium allows files and e-mails to travel along.

In simpler terms the internet is the highway system that connects many cities, and the web are the fuelling stations and pit stops along the way. The following is a short video describing the difference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVkT59PmRdo

Web 1.0 or sometimes referred to as “The read only web” was a large group of web pages created by few people, that allowed users to access information and facts.

Web 2.0 put more of an emphasis on user generated content, with the introduction of social media platforms, encouraging self-usage through the likes of podcasts, blogging, tagging etc. This is the most recognised Web and the most common web platform for most of present-day users.

And then there was web 3.0, which is still in the development process and will become more prevalent in the not-so-distant future. Web 3.0 pushes users away from centralised and regulated platforms like Google and Facebook, promising a shift toward a more decentralised, user – controlled platform. Unlike centralised platforms, web 3.0 will incorporate AI, smart platforms, that prioritise user privacy and autonomy.
