Have you ever experienced search engine optimisation? If you are unsure, I can almost guarantee if you have ever used a search engine you have.

After this blog the aim is that you as the reader will have a deeper understanding of what SEO is, how it works and what it means for smaller businesses.

SEO or search engine optimisation is a tool used by businesses to help search engines understand your content, helping users find your site, and then decide on if they want to visit your site or not. A key point to note that SEO is traffic from free, organic search results on search engines, compared to “Pay per click” which is where search engines will directly advertise a business’s content ranking them higher in the results list.

As a digital marketer it is essential to understand the core skills of getting your brand, company or website noticed by searchers especially when competing against big brands. SEO can be divided into 3 main pillars that must be actioned regularly.

1.        Technical Optimisation: this is the process of completing activities on your site, without being directly related to the SEO.

2.        On page optimisation: this is ensuring the content is on your site is relevant and relates to your product, using the likes of keywords etc… a well-known tool that can be used for this is Shopify.

3.        Off page optimisation: this refers to the activities outside of your website that influence the search engine visibility and ranking. The use of social media marketing and influencer marketing are all key in this pillar.

By optimising these 3 pillars of SEO a digital marketer will set his company and product up for success. To drive organic traffic of the website they are the 3 key areas to focus on and will help with competing with big brands.
